Well, time management is all about managing our time effectively. It involves planning, organizing, motivating, setting goals, and evaluating our actions. Each of these things is critical to successful time management.
For example, when you plan, you know what needs to be done. This allows you to prioritize your tasks and set realistic deadlines.
Organization helps you allocate your resources and energy efficiently. Motivation helps you focus on your goals. Time tracking helps you monitor your progress and make necessary adjustments.
And finally, measuring your results helps you analyze what worked and what didn’t.
Remember, time management isn’t something you can just learn and forget.
It takes practice. And it’s important to keep in mind that what works for one person may not work for another.
Each person needs to adapt the methods to their own specific needs and lifestyle. But there are some basic principles that anyone can use to improve their time management.
Add More ‘Days’ to Your Day
Forget that there are 24 hours in a day. Instead of thinking of your day as one block of time, divide your waking hours into three equal parts-mini-days.
- The “first day” can be from 6 a.m. to noon.
- The “second day” is from noon to 6 p.m.
- And the “third day” is until midnight.
By creating shorter days, the brain begins to value every minute more. You won’t waste time because your sense of urgency will be sharper. You will focus on what needs to be done “today”.
With this strategy, you can squeeze work, relationships, productivity, fitness, and entertainment into shorter, more intense periods. At the same time, remember that there needs to be balance in your life, too. You simply need to get rid of useless time during wasted periods of the day.
Treat Your Time with a Greater Sense of Urgency
Compare the behavior of athletes in a marathon and a 100-meter dash. In a 42-km marathon, the pace remains steady. But as the runner gets closer to the finish line, adrenaline levels rise. They push themselves as they get closer to their goal and the finish line.
A 100m sprint is a straight line from start to finish.
Athletes accelerate at maximum from the start, which requires a different approach. The way you perceive distance affects your ability to feel the urgency necessary to work more effectively.
When a goal is far away, you approach it. But when it is right in front of you, you go into a sprint.
If you apply this approach to everything you do throughout the day, week, or year, you will have more time and a sense of accomplishment that others can only dream of.

Instead of Being Controlled by Time, Learn to Control It
The desire to control your time is an attitude that should be activated as soon as your brain wakes up in the morning. Pay attention to the first thoughts you have during the day, as they are often the most important.

Avoid using devices such as phones, computers, TVs, and other distractions that can take you away from important activities. Use this time to plan your day, review your list of meetings, appointments, and projects, prioritize, meditate, exercise, and clarify your goals for the day ahead.

There are many excellent and free applications that can help you manage your time more effectively. Here are a few examples.
- Toggle. This app allows you to track the time you spend on different activities.
- RescueTime. This application automatically tracks how much time you spend in front of screens and on which websites.
- Cold Turkey Blocker. This application allows you to block access to certain websites while you work, reducing distractions.
Before your brain is overwhelmed by people, events, or information, it has a chance to focus and concentrate. When you feel in control of your situation, you start the day with more confidence and goals.
Measure Your Performance
It’s also important to measure your performance more frequently to make sure you’re making progress toward your goals. Productivity improves when it can be measured, but make sure you measure the right things.
Clearly define your goals, prioritize them, and set standards. Understand how these things interact, and learn to identify both your weaknesses and their potential causes.
If your goal is to run a mile and a half in five minutes, or to increase your sales by 50%, or to increase your revenue by $50,000, how will you know if you have achieved these goals without looking at the numbers?
On average, people measure their results once or twice a year, but the best do it monthly or weekly. Do you review the week on Friday night? Do you plan for next week on Sunday night? The most successful people go through this process every day.
Focus on the Future
Many people get stuck in the past, which kills their productivity and makes it difficult to plan for the future.
The past is gone forever, but until we let it go, we deny ourselves the ability to dream and imagine.
We need to spend more time thinking about the future, because that’s where our lives are headed. We also can’t let go of the present, because that’s how we create a better tomorrow.
This doesn’t mean that we should ignore our past traumas. We must find ways to heal them and move forward. But we should avoid falling into the trap of loving our past when we have accomplished something remarkable, like getting a higher education or a promotion.
That’s wonderful, but if we stop after achieving success, we will still be living in the past and not building a better future for ourselves.
Remember to dream about your future and take decisive steps in the present to create that future for yourself.
